What is achieved?

Project deliverables

The project has three major components:

• To create practical models of a waste water management system

• To create organic waste compost and manure management systems

• To disseminate the information in order to educate rural population and ensure replication across the country.

 

The first two components refer to building the systems as working models, while the last component will spread information about best practices and model replication.

 

Expected results

 

Short term: improvement of waste water management system and domestic waste management in the targeted area.

Long term: improvement of waste water management system and domestic waste management in other rural touristic areas across Romania.

 

 

Innovative level

 

The grant will fully support the implementation of innovative ideas in waste water management and waste management systems, contributing to the future replication of the models.

The waste water management systems using reed-bed filters will be unique to Romania being developed with support from BioForsk (The Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research). After the 2 different systems will be fully operational, Bioforsk will perform a comparative research on the efficiency of the two models in both warm and cold seasons. They will issue recommendations on the most efficient one; information that will be included in the best practices guide.

Turning organic waste into compost and use it as fertilizer will be highly new technique to be embraced by people in rural areas. They will be trained in eliminating the organic waste from their household in an efficient and innovative way. Compost will provide good quality fertilizer for their land and gardens.

Other benefits of organic waste composting can be reduction in carbon emissions, reduction in number of waste collections and associated costs, reduction in waste costs as organic waste is generally the heaviest component of general waste and reduction of vermin issues.

Manure management systems are rare in Romania and implementing such systems will prevent groundwater contamination and can be efficiently used as fertilizer.

Building two practical models of waste waters management systems using biological waste water treatment through reed bed filters for rural tourism facilities and the nearby households. The project will facilitate the dissemination of the information and will contribute to success ful replication in other areas by designing and distributing a best practices guide. The guide will hold relevant information about the technologies used and the results achieved.

Description

 

 

The two type of models of reed bed filters waste water management system will be constructed and will operate. A comparative research will determine which one operates better under the Romanian conditions. The technical solution for avoiding soil and ground waters contamination due to the manure storage directly on the ground consist in building concrete manure platforms with separate drainage and storage system for the liquid waste. Those systems are facilitating also the usage of the manure and the liquid waste as natural fertilizers. The organic waste compost i s not common in Romania and this practice should become usual for all rural areas and storage system for the liquid waste. A best practices guide including information on the reed bed filters waste water management, organic waste compost and manure management systems created and distributed.

 

Description

 

Bioforsk Norway will perform a comparative research on the efficiency of the two waste water management models during the warm and cold seasons and will recommend the most efficient one to be described in the best practices guide. The best practice guide will also include information about the environmentally friendly organic waste compost and manure management systems. The guide will be distributed in other areas where the rural tourism is developed as well as to all interested parties.

The guide will be also available and distributed in electronic format.
